Split is the starting point. Split is the second largest city in Croatia, built in and around a Roman palace that has been standing for 1,700 years. Diocletian retired here in 305 AD, and people never left. Today the palace walls hold apartments, restaurants, bars, and a cathedral that used to be the emperor’s mausoleum. History isn’t preserved in Split — it’s lived in.
The waterfront promenade runs along the southern edge of the old town, with palm trees on one side and the harbour on the other. This is where Split happens — morning coffee, evening drinks, and people-watching at all hours. Ferries and catamarans come and go. Fishing boats unload the day’s catch. Cruise ships anchor in the distance. The Riva faces south, which means sun from morning until sunset.
Diocletian’s Palace is not merely a museum or a ruin, but rather a vibrant neighbourhood. Narrow streets twist through the ancient walls, opening into hidden squares and courtyards. Peristyle, the central courtyard, hosts concerts in the summer. The basement halls, once flooded and forgotten, now hold market stalls and exhibitions. The cathedral bell tower offers views over the rooftops to the sea.
The green hill sits on the western edge of the city. The hill boasts pine forests, hiking trails, cliff beaches, and a breathtaking view that extends from the islands to the mountains. Locals jog here in the morning and swim here in the afternoon. Just a thirty-minute walk from the old town transports you to a completely different world.
Split is a destination, but it’s also a departure point. The islands of central Dalmatia fan out across the water—Hvar, Brač, Vis, Šolta, and dozens more. Speedboats can reach the Blue Cave, the Blue Lagoon, and the Pakleni Islands. Ferries run to the bigger islands, but a boat tour covers more ground in less time and drops you in places ferries don’t go.
All boat tours depart from the Riva, right in front of the old town. The meeting point is easy to find — Obala Hrvatskog narodnog preporoda, the main waterfront promenade. Fifteen minutes early, look for the Colnago speedboat, step aboard, and go.
Custom-built speedboats, professional crew, stunning islands. Just pick a date.
