The Blue Cave sits inside a small island called Biševo, about two hours from Split by speedboat. A narrow entrance, barely wide enough for a rowboat, opens into a flooded cavern where sunlight hits the water and turns everything electric blue. No filters, no tricks — just limestone, seawater, and the right angle of sun. People come from all over the world to see it, and for good reason.
The light enters through an underwater opening and reflects off the white sandy bottom. Between 11:00 and 12:00 on clear days, the effect is strongest — the whole cave glows like someone switched on a light beneath the surface. Photos don’t quite capture it. The colour shifts constantly, brighter in some spots, deeper in others. Thirty seconds inside and it’s obvious why this place became famous.
Biševo has no ferry service worth mentioning. Most visitors reach the Blue Cave on organised boat tours from Split, Hvar, or Vis. The trip from Split covers serious distance, which is why the right boat matters. A Colnago speedboat handles the open water between Vis and Biševo far better than the slow wooden boats some operators use. You can spend less time travelling and more time exploring the cave and other nearby islands.
The cave is managed by the local tourist board. Entrance costs €15 per person, paid separately on site. Small rowboats ferry visitors inside in groups of around ten. The whole visit takes about fifteen minutes — short but worth it.
Rough seas close the cave. The entrance is too narrow and the rocks too close for safe access when there’s swell. This event happens more often than most visitors expect, especially in spring and autumn. No operator can guarantee entry, but a morning departure gives the best odds — conditions tend to worsen through the afternoon.
A Blue Cave boat tour from Split usually includes more than just Biševo. Vis town, Stiniva beach, Budikovac lagoon, and a stop on Hvar fill out the day. While the cave is the main attraction, the rest of the route is equally captivating.
