Squeeze 2,300 years of history onto an island the size of a few football fields, and you’ll find Trogir. Greeks founded it, Romans expanded it, and Venetians built most of what still stands. The entire old town is UNESCO-listed — every building and square is included. The old town boasts stone streets, stone churches, stone palaces, and a cathedral that took four centuries to complete.
A small bridge connects the mainland to the island. Once across, cars disappear and the middle ages take over. Narrow lanes twist between buildings, opening suddenly into sunlit squares. The main square holds the Cathedral of St Lawrence, famous for a portal carved by the master Radovan in 1240 — figures, animals, saints, and monsters in extraordinary detail. Climb the bell tower for a view over the rooftops to the sea.
Trogir’s Riva wraps around the southern edge of the island, lined with palm trees, restaurants, and cafes. Yachts and sailboats fill the harbour. The pace is slower than in Split, the crowds thinner, and the atmosphere more relaxed. Grab a table, order coffee, and watch the boats come and go. This is the Dalmatian lifestyle at its most unhurried.
The Venetian fortress, located at the western tip of the island, was constructed in the 15th century to protect the harbour. The walls are walkable, the views stretch across to Čiovo island, and in summer the courtyard hosts open-air concerts and film screenings. The small entrance fee is well worth it.
Čiovo island is connected to Trogir by a second bridge on the south side. Most visitors ignore it, which is a mistake. The south coast of Čiovo has hidden coves, clear water, and none of the crowds. A quick detour by boat opens up swimming spots that feel miles from anywhere.
Trogir can be reached in thirty minutes by speedboat from Split, or approximately the same time by car. The airport sits nearby, making Trogir a common first or last stop for visitors flying in and out. By boat, Trogir works as a destination, a pickup point, or a stop on the way to the Blue Lagoon and Drvenik islands.
Custom-built speedboats, professional crew, stunning islands. Just pick a date.
